Who Is Responsible & Where to Start
Your first point of contact is your local youth welfare office. There, you will find a foster care service department and an adoption department.
Foster Children: Key Conditions and Special Considerations
Many youth welfare offices welcome people who are interested in becoming foster parents. Foster children bring a wide range of experiences with them. In many cases, placement in a foster family takes place for the protection and well-being of the child, following a professional assessment and, where necessary, a decision by the family court. The reasons are varied and may include ongoing challenges or a lack of stability in everyday life.
Regular contact with the birth family, for example on a monthly basis, is common and may stir up emotions in children. You will not be left to deal with this on your own: support from professionals, exchange with other foster parents in support groups, and close cooperation with the youth welfare office provide guidance and reassurance. Foster parents offer children a stable place to live; legal matters are clarified together with the youth welfare office.
Domestic Adoption
Adoptionen innerhalb Deutschlands sind insgesamt selten; Geduld ist daher wichtig. Sie erhalten Beratung und Vorbereitung, damit jeder Schritt gut informiert gelingt.
Intercountry Adoption
For intercountry adoption, the first point of contact is an accredited adoption placement agency. The agency will coordinate the next steps with the local youth welfare office, which carries out the general suitability assessment in accordance with German law. This process usually takes six to twelve months. Specialist consultations with the intercountry adoption agency can take place in parallel with the suitability assessment. The agency provides reliable support throughout the process and offers transparent information about waiting times, which may be longer depending on the country. Children are often at least three years old by the time they enter Germany.
Preparation & Follow-up Support
Many countries of origin require parents to attend preparation seminars, as well as submit post-placement or developmental reports on a regular basis until the child reaches adulthood. These steps serve the best interests of the child and provide families with long-term support.
Connections to the Child’s Origins
It is important for the countries of origin to know how the children are doing in the long term. Many adoptees later wish to learn more about their origins and, in some cases, establish personal connections. These processes are usually overseen by professionals, such as local social workers, and guided by the wishes of those involved.
No matter which path you are considering, you don't have to take it alone. Seek advice early on, ask all your questions and take your time. Every journey towards starting a family is unique and will unfold in its own way.
